World Dream Atlas
« I didn’t dream for a long time. I worked as a professional bartender for years, so it’s hard to tell when the work became the addiction. I had a very unhappy marriage and I self-medicated. The marriage ended though, and at the beginning of the year, I completely stopped drinking. After that, the dreams came flooding back. I remember dreaming of really futuristic Rolls Royce that drove up to the entrance of a gala. It was a beautiful machine – sleek and white. It used robotics to expand its chassis – to become wider. I’m an engineer, so I remember thinking, what is the purpose of that? It must go thinner to park and wider to give itself a more stable wheel base when it’s clipping along on the road, or maybe just to look cool. In my dreams I’m always inventing – always creating things. I had a lot of loss this year, but even more than that, it has been a year of building. You can’t have one without the other. I work as a laser cutter, and the laser cannot build without destroying. All things will be destroyed one day. It’s thermodynamics. You could carve it on titanium and bury it underground like the Scientologists have done with their teachings, so that even when earth is destroyed, this thing will be floating around in space. Guess what? It’s going to get sucked into the sun. There is always a greater power. Everything is in flux. These fucking mountains are in flux. This sand that we’re standing on is made of ground up mountains. Here we are standing in the ashes of whatever used to be, deciding what comes next. »
